Manchester United: Marcus Rashford Accepts Responsibility for Missing FA Cup Clash with Newport

Manchester United has addressed an “internal disciplinary” matter involving Marcus Rashford, who was notably absent from the team’s 4-2 victory against Newport County. Initially, Rashford’s absence was attributed to illness, although he was seen in Belfast earlier in the week.

In a statement issued on Monday, Manchester United stated, “Marcus has acknowledged his actions. The matter has been resolved as an internal disciplinary issue, and it is now closed.” Rashford is set to be eligible for selection for the upcoming match against Wolves at Molineux on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag, United’s manager since 2022, acknowledged the existence of a problematic culture upon his arrival at the club. Disciplinary issues have arisen during his tenure, and when questioned about Rashford’s situation after the Newport game, he commented, “I don’t delve into this case. We discussed it before, played a good game, and now we move on.”

This incident marks the second time in just over a year that Rashford has faced disciplinary action from Ten Hag. Previously, he was dropped from the starting XI against Wolves on December 31, 2022, for being late to a team meeting but later scored the winning goal in that match.

Rashford had also issued an apology to Ten Hag earlier in the season for hosting a birthday party shortly after United’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City. Ten Hag had deemed the behavior “unacceptable” and stated, “I told him, he apologized, and that is it.”

Last week, Ten Hag mentioned the challenges of signing a striker in the January transfer window due to Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions. With Anthony Martial sidelined due to injury, Rashford was considered an option to fill the gap in the squad.
