South Korea Advances in Asian Cup as Saudi Arabia Falters in Penalty Shootout

South Korea secured a spot in the Asian Cup quarterfinals after defeating Saudi Arabia 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in an exciting last-16 match that extended into extra time at Education City Stadium.

Cho Gue-sung’s second-half added-time equalizer nullified Abdullah Radif’s opener, leading the game to a penalty shootout where Sami al-Najei and Abdulrahman Ghareeb missed their penalties for Saudi Arabia. Jo Hyeon-woo’s crucial saves ensured South Korea’s progression.

Jo Hyeon-woo expressed confidence in his ability to make saves, stating, “I’m happy I could take my team through to the next round.”

Despite the challenging 120 minutes of play, South Korea now faces a quick turnaround as they prepare for the quarterfinal against 2015 champions Australia on Friday.

South Korea coach Jürgen Klinsmann reflected on the team’s performance, saying, “This win has given this team more spirit. I enjoy coaching this group, and they badly want to do well for their country. We wanted to win before penalties; we didn’t count on a shootout.”

The vibrant atmosphere at Education City Stadium, with vocal fans and banners proclaiming “Asia is Green,” created a home-game feel for Saudi Arabia. However, it was the South Korean team in bright orange that emerged victorious, as Saudi Arabia ran out of energy in the dying stages and succumbed to the pressure.

Saudi Arabia had opportunities in the first half, with two headers hitting the crossbar and a third saved by goalkeeper Jo. Meanwhile, Son Heung-min had chances for South Korea but couldn’t find the back of the net, resulting in a goalless first half.
