How UAE Gratuity Is Calculated
For an eligible expatriate full-time worker in the UAE private sector under the traditional end-of-service gratuity system, the calculation is based on the worker’s last basic salary and eligible continuous service period.
Once the worker has completed at least one year of continuous service, eligible fractions of a year are calculated proportionately. Unpaid absence days entered into this calculator are removed from the service period.
The total traditional gratuity is capped at the equivalent of two years’ wage.
Example Calculation
Suppose the last basic salary is AED 5,000 and eligible service is exactly 6 years.
Daily basic wage = AED 5,000 ÷ 30 = AED 166.67.
First 5 years = 5 × 21 days = 105 gratuity days.
Sixth year = 30 gratuity days.
Total = 135 gratuity days × AED 166.67 = approximately AED 22,500.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can use this UAE Gratuity Calculator?
This calculator is intended as an estimation tool for expatriate full-time workers in the UAE private sector who are covered by the traditional end-of-service gratuity system.
How much service is required to receive gratuity?
Under the traditional system, a full-time foreign worker generally needs to complete at least one year of continuous service to become entitled to end-of-service gratuity.
Is UAE gratuity calculated on basic salary or total salary?
Traditional end-of-service gratuity for an eligible expatriate private-sector worker is calculated using the last basic salary. Housing, transport and similar allowances are not included in the gratuity calculation base.
How much gratuity is payable for the first five years?
The traditional calculation uses 21 days of basic wage for each year of the first five eligible years of service.
What happens after five years of service?
Eligible service exceeding the first five years is calculated at 30 days of basic wage for each additional year.
Is gratuity calculated for part of a year?
Yes. After completing at least one year of continuous service, a worker may be entitled to gratuity for an eligible fraction of a year proportionate to the period served.
Are unpaid absence days included in the service period?
No. Unpaid absence days are not included when calculating the eligible service period for traditional end-of-service gratuity.
Is there a maximum UAE gratuity amount?
Yes. Under the traditional private-sector calculation, the total end-of-service gratuity must not exceed the equivalent of two years’ wage.
When should end-of-service benefits be paid?
Official UAE Government guidance states that the employer must pay outstanding wages, other entitlements and end-of-service gratuity within 14 days after termination of the employment contract, subject to applicable rules and lawful deductions.
Does this calculator apply to the UAE Savings Scheme?
No. The voluntary alternative end-of-service benefits Savings Scheme uses employer contributions to approved investment funds. This calculator estimates traditional gratuity and should not be used to estimate benefits accumulated under the alternative scheme.
Does this calculator apply to part-time employees?
This version is designed for full-time employment only. UAE rules provide a separate proportional method for certain part-time and other work patterns.
Is the calculator result legally binding?
No. The result is an estimate only. Actual entitlement can depend on the employment arrangement, service history, unpaid absence, applicable legislation, lawful deductions, alternative scheme participation and other individual circumstances.
